Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the IRS has extended the regular federal tax filing deadline of April 15 to July 15. This means that expats have one more month to file and pay their US taxes as the automatic extended deadline for expats is June 15. No late payment interest or penalties will be incurred till July 16, if you owe US taxes.
Normally the US federal tax return needs to be filed and paid by April 15. However, if you are an expat you get an automatic extension to June 15. Further, you can request an additional extension to October 15.
Note that if you would file later than April 15, and eventually owe US taxes, late payment interest will be incurred on the US tax liability.
